  • Question: Politics

I had a person recently ask me:

    1. Can a Christian be a Democrat?
    2. Are all Democrats "baby killers"?
    3. Must all Christians be Republicans?

This person was genuine in asking.  You can tell it was an issue that he/she had been taught about before but was struggling with different ideas now.  If you were asked these questions, how would you respond?

  • Take a look at this: http://burnsidewriterscollective.blogspot.com/2008/09/interview-with-donald-miller.html It may be helpful in dealing w/ these issues.

Also, your kiddo is really damn cute!

    The Colonel

  • @The Colonel - Thanks.  The apple doesn't fall from the tree, huh?

  • 1. Yes

    2. No

    3. No

:) In total seriousness, I don't want to write a book on your blog, but I do think that Pastor Eugene Cho has posted a great article about this from Sojourners on his blog today: http://eugenecho.wordpress.com/2008/10/01/the-meaning-of-life/

  • This is over my head babe, but you know my opinions on the topic.

  • I guess when that comes around ask what would Jesus Do whould he vote for (R)or(D).?

If one canident hold the moral issues.Like abortion would Jesus allow this?or samesex marriage?

Yes you can vote for who you want just because you like what they say. But if your heart is convicted and torn,

and makes you think twice then follow your heart.  I tell my daughter Megan that you can follow the world or have an easy life or follow Jesus and do the right thing and find your reward in heaven.

I have friends in church that are Demorcrat,my dad is a demorcrat he belives in God. you just got to go with your gut. God bless <>< Renee  hey Nate your daughter is just like her mama Can't wait to see her at Grandma petersons house.   And to all you who think I can't spell. well I can't I have chemo brain!

  • @rnf2 - Thanks for your thoughts, Renee!  Look forward to seeing you as well!!

  • I had never thought about this before I lived in Chicago for those three months. I really thought all Christians were Republicans. Then I found out there are people who honestly ask "Can a Christian be a Republican?" That semester has drastically changed the way I see the world and politics.

  • if memory serves her stump speech/sermon ended with her praying for there be an army raised up to take back this nation. too many remarks such as this to count. the thought bubble expressing vexation says it all.

  • ugh, seriously. That's a tough one.

  • For the record:  I've known people that were believers and followers of Christ there were also the following:

    Democrats
    Republicans
    Gay
    Bad dancers
    Pro-Choice
Smokers (of tobacco and other herbs)
    Pro same sex marriage
    Drinkers
    Sinners
    Scientists
Fans of American Idol (the biggest sin of all)

  • @The Colonel - Bret, I might even fit into some of those categories... "GASP!"

  • yes

    no

    no

I believe that thinking otherwise is ignorant.  There are planty of lying cheating underhanded repblicans out there.  John McCain lies in the ads that he approves as much as Obama does.  I am very sick of asking people why they choose one candidate over another and they respond that they are doing it because of the party that they belong to.  Republican because I am a christian.  Democrat because they will save the economy.  Both are a facade

  • @JeremiahLuis - Thanks.  I agree.  I don't understand loyalty to a party.  If there's anything I can understand it's loyalty to the missio dei.

And, I was just in Tire Rack the other day getting new wheels for Ema's car.  They handle all my tire needs quite adequately.

  • I think if I were asked this question...which is excellent blogging topic btw.....I would answer with  a question.  If God is no respecter of persons...then does HE...God, Creator, Master, King of Kings....allign himself with an American political partyor expect his children to?  Would it not be "christian" of us, to instead, be informed of today's climate but really be on no political side because we are keeping an ear close to Christ? Isn't He aware of who is going in anyway? Our politics aren't necessarily the barometer of a willing heart.

  • Wait...so...you guys are saying that Jesus actually maybe WASN'T a republican??
    Oh my goodness...

  • @corey robinson - Nice, Corey.  Great point.

  • I think Jesus was a democrat.  As far as I understand political standing, but that's not real far.

  • Surely those questions are very similar to things you may have been asked in elementary school
"1. Can Bob play Hockey although none of his friends do"
    "2. Are all girls "stinky"?"
"3. Must Bob play Basketball cos all his friends do?"

Makes me giggle that people actually ask questions like that (and for the record it's obviously Y, N, N - anything else would mean that 50% of people are the same, can be bracketed into 2 categories, and can be labelled with a crazy term like 'baby killer').
  • @Ushwin - Thanks Ush.  Nice analogy.
